Why E-3
Built for Australians under AUSFTA
Introduced in 2005, the E-3 is a dedicated category for Australian citizens seeking specialty-occupation work in the United States. It sits outside the H-1B cap pressure that affects many other nationalities — but it still demands a qualifying job, employer sponsorship, and adherence to US immigration rules.
Cost & flexibility. Many employers find the Labor Condition Application pathway more predictable than H-1B lottery timing — though every case differs.
Dependents. Spouses and children may accompany in E-3D status; spouses may apply for US work authorisation — confirm current regulations before you plan finances.
Renewals. E-3 status is tied to continuing qualifying employment; renewals are common when employment remains eligible — not automatic, and not a substitute for permanent residence pathways if that is your goal.
Who it is not for. Australian permanent residents who are not citizens are not eligible for E-3 — citizenship matters for this category.
